embrol saw the glow of Reithal’s lights above the wooden stockade as the column approached at a trot. Commander Highland rode alongside him.

“Reithal at last. We really should take advantage of the town’s hospitality.”

Tembrol looked down his nose at Headland. “We have already discussed this. Duty first.”

“As you have said, my lord,” Headland said rather unenthusiastically.

Tembrol had arranged for them to leave Gnaef late in the morning. This ensured their arrival outside of town after dark–well past the time that his premonition said Sandrik would enter Reithal. The best chance to retrieve the sword would be while Sandrik was away. He concealed Sandrik’s presence in Reithal from Headland, and instead persuaded the commander that it would be best for them to arrive at Taernfeld in daylight, so that Sandrik could not easily evade them. To this end, they needed to be further up the road before they made camp.

They settled in for the night at the end of the cart trail that led up Calhorn. Vadon set up Tembrol’s tent. The rest pitched their own tents under Commander Headland’s observation.

“Not the comforts of home, but it is good training to deal with some discomfort,” Headland announced.

He talked as though he was trying to buoy their spirits, but it was obvious he was the one who needed encouragement. The veterans ignored his posturing.

“Discomfort? This is nothing; it is practically balmy,” silver-haired veteran Brendor Carlson scoffed. “Now give us a midwinter freeze–that might get us to wishing for home.”

Tembrol retired to his tent and a light meal, then dismissed Vadon.
